Hans Hofmann – January 1967 André Emmerich Gallery Exhibition Poster (Framed)

$1,000.00

Andre Emmerich Gallery New York

Hans Hofmann (1880-1966 German) was a renowned abstract expressionist painter. Hans is celebrated for his bold use of vibrant color and dynamic composition which is well showcased in this poster, that truly defines mid-century Abstract Expressionism. This rare out of print poster features an original artwork created by Hofmann in 1963 titled "Ignotum Per Ignotius".

The Latin phrase “Ignotum Per Ignotius” translates to “the unknown by means of the more unknown.”

It’s a philosophical expression (often used critically) meaning trying to explain something obscure with something even more obscure — in other words, offering an explanation that’s harder to understand than the original mystery.

It fits interestingly with Hans Hofmann’s abstract work, where the meaning is intentionally layered and open to interpretation.
